An Open Letter to Charles Krauthammer

By Nicole Coulter

Dear Dr. Krauthammer ...

I'm one of your biggest fans. You are a brilliant writer and thinker with an unmatched ability to eloquently defend conservative and Republican views. I love watching you on the Fox All-Stars, and seeing your columns on the liberal pages of the Washington Post.

But sorry to say, I have a major bone to pick with a comment you made to the the German magazine, der Spiegel recently. In that otherwise stellar interview, you were asked about the future of the Republican party. You immediately volunteered that, "Sarah Palin is not a serious contender" and added no further explanation, while going on to praise the likes of junior Congressman Paul Ryan, whom I like, but I don't think many people would immediately believe is ready to lead America.

Here's my question to you (with all due respect): If Sarah Palin is not a serious contender, why is she having so much influence in the political discourse of the moment? More influence than Paul Ryan, or Tim Pawlenty, or Mitt Romney. And why do the White House and Democratic Party pay so much attention to her?

This past summer Sarah Palin singlehandedly changed the trajectory of the healthcare debate. With a Facebook post succinctly opposing the immorality of government rationing, she forced Obama to go where he didn't want to go: away from his faux-conservative mantra of "cost savings" to a discussion of moral absolutes. You even agreed with Sarah's concern about rationing, but disliked her style of rhetoric, and told her to "leave the room."

Now in October, Sarah is back at it, seriously affecting the NY-23 House race, directing hundreds of thousands of Facebook fans to donate to Doug Hoffman's "renegade" conservative campaign. Her endorsement opened the floodgates of establishment support (Pawlenty, DeMint, others) for the fiscally more responsible Hoffman, who in some polls is now actually pulling ahead with a chance to actually win.

Given all this, what do you really have against Sarah Palin? It can't be her policy views, which I believe closely match your own. So I can only conclude it is either her gender, her age, or condescending whispers about her from your elite contemporaries.

And what I would like to say is this: Don't make the fatal mistake of believing liberal propaganda about her. Did liberals listen to us conservatives last year and refuse to support Barack Obama? No. Did they care that we said he was a "celebrity" or "too radical" or "too inexperienced"? It didn't matter in the end, did it? Why do we conservatives tend to believe the worst about our own stars? We do ourselves a disservice listening to the enemy.

In my view, the very liberals who attack Sarah prove she is a serious contender. She is rarely off the radar screen despite not doing a live interview in more than three months. Who pays this much attention to a former governor and former VP pick? If she's a lightweight, or easy win, why do they attempt to destroy her? Wouldn't they be propping her up to be the sacrificial lamb in 2012? That's what they claim to want.

But it's not what they want - because they fear her - like no other. The truth is, Sarah is the head of the table. She has the innate ability to captivate and demand attention. Just like Churchill. Just like Reagan. She's a born leader.

I realize it may take awhile for you to notice this but Sarah Palin is at once the figure who most inspired this year's Tea Party movement, and the one who is most attuned to this popular (fiscally conservative) uprising. She, like no other "serious presidential contender" has carefully read the mood of a vast segment of the electorate while simultaneously and meticulously expanding its ranks.

Like it or not, and whether you believe it or not, Sarah leads the Republican resistance. And she needs the intellectual giants on our side to assist her, not abet the enemy.

You might start, if you haven't already, by reading her well-researched policy essays on her Facebook page, taking note of her 950,000 supporters (dwarfing any other potential 2012 candidate). And I encourage you to read the informed support she enjoyes on this blog and others like Conseratives4Palin.com. We're not kooks. We're not right-wing religious loons. We're Americans who are fed up of the federal abuse of power that threatens to bankrupt our nation and short-change our children's futures.

In conclusion, please know I and millions of others pray for your health - as well as your change of heart on Sarah Palin!

We need you at the table, Dr. K!

Nicole:

Like you, I'm a Charles Krauthammer admirer. My Wife can tell you that when he is shown to be on the Special Report Panel, I'm heard to exclaim, "My hero!" And, like you, I'm baffled by Krauthammer's stance regarding Palin, though I haven't elevated my views of her quite as far as you have. I, truly, hope Krauthammer will respond to your open letter.

Beautifully thought out and written. Thank you Nicole. What the liberal biased news media did to Sarah and her family is despicable. Journalism died many years ago.

Dr K , just walkin around the potential company car kicking the tires ... may look under the hood , go for a ride etc. I have a funny feeling that after Oprah , Dr. K will sound more like Dr. Zero

Well done. Upon reflection, do we need him at the table? Must it be now? It would be nice to sit next to him if only to fawn over his brilliant Obama as Hamlet masterpiece.

While we have arrived early to the (dinner) party to see if we can help with the party, there are some who prefer to be fashionably late. A grand entrance their motivation or their own personal Hamlet? Who's to say but it is rather disheartening to have him forecast rain for our parade. Take heart as Algoreicle had not RSVP so clear skies are all but assured.

I really like your blog!! I like what you wrote about Peggy Noonan also. I think you are right about both and respectful also. Love K but think he should give Sarah a more fair hearing. Don't be a snobbish elite because that will get you know where with anyone except other snobbish elites. We want to actually win a country over!!
Thanks for your excellent writing!!
